Recently I checked out the new Duracell Quantum battery which came out this summer. Advertised as the "world's most advanced Alkaline battery" with the longest battery life and featuring an on device battery tester. It sounded like the latest and greatest. At roughly twice the price of a regular brand name battery and three times the price of a generic battery, I researched it online to see if it made sense to pay the premium. After a ton of internet searches I couldn't find any scientific studies that mentioned exactly how much better it was. I found this very odd and could find nothing even on the Duracell site. All I could find were tons of references about how Duracell was giving away a million of these batteries to First Responders which began to sound more and more like marketing speak (Duracell Quantum for First Responders announcement).
So I decided to test the new Quantum batteries against existing batteries to see if they are worth the additional cost. The result: Save your money and do not buy the new Duracell Quantum batteries!
I view Alkaline batteries as commodity items which have changed little in the last 100 years; I tend to buy whatever is available or on sale, and have zero loyalty toward any brand. With three kids and a ton of toys, I go through batteries by the case and fill more landfills than I should. To keep up with the demand, I typically buy large packs of generic AA and AAA batteries at Costco or other discount stores. I am aware of higher end batteries such as the Energizer E2 but never considered buying them since they are expensive and are not geared toward general usage.
There are many kinds of battery tests and some specifically say "better for point and shoot cameras" or "battery operated flash". Plus, many of the comparisons, like the one below, compare the amount of flashes and the recharge time. But seriously, how many people are using these types of devices? And does the average guy on the street really care if it takes 4 seconds or 7 seconds for his flash to go off? Some studies rate batteries on how many years they can last in storage without losing charge or leaking. Most of us are neither emergency workers nor outdoorsmen, so this is also irrelevant. I just want to know which battery is going to power one of my son's toy trains for as long as possible without needing a replacement.
I decided to consider everyday devices where I use batteries. Flashlights, remote controls and toys. In the interest of saving time I sacrificed some scientific integrity and scratched "remote controls" off the list; it would take me months to analyze battery usage in remotes. I started with a simple flashlight tests; I have three brand new Duracell battery operated flashlights which are rated, per Duracell, to run for an hour at maximum illumination on three AAA batteries. I used three types of batteries for my test, Duracell Quantum, Duracell CopperTop and Costco's Kirkland brand. Here are the results:

Lasted 2 hours 1 minute.
Cost: Roughly $1/battery ($21.94 for 20 on Amazon)
Lasted 2 hour 24 minutes.
Cost: About $.57/battery ($11.99 for 20 on Amazon)
Costco Kirkland Brand:
Lasted 1 hour 20 minutes.
Cost: $.38/battery ($18.22 for 48 at Costco.com)
And by the way, the highly touted "Power Meter" feature is a useless gimmick. All it's good for is to tell if a battery is fully charged or discharged. I ran a toy non-stop until it was almost dead and the battery power still showed that the battery had 75% charge. A re-calibration is in order.
The Duracell Quantum might be your battery of choice for the few folks who still use a battery operated flash, want a battery that can sit in storage for 10 years or have money to burn. The rest of us can stick with the good old CopperTop or commodity batteries.
Thanks For The Review... I Just Purchased A 6~Pack Of Duracell's NEW Quantum Batteres For My SONY Walkman. I'm Already Pre~Disappointed Thanks To Your Review. LOL I Hae Buying Generic Anything Though... That's Just Me. Could You Recommend The Best/Cost~Effective Brand Name Battery For Me. Thanks In Advance.
ReplyDeleteHow did the batteries work out?
Deleteyou have a walkmam?....
DeleteI agree the term "Walkman" is decidedly 1980s but Sony does indeed have a line of current Walkman products that include DVD, MP3 and CD players. :). Probably they are trying to milk the brand name for whatever its worth.
DeleteWhy are you capitalizing every word?
Deleteco2 alarms only take the quantum. I have been suspicious from the get go. batteries and ink=big business
DeleteHow does the alarm know if it's a quantum battery or not?
DeleteHow does the alarm know if it's a quantum battery or not?
DeleteYes , I had a operating Walkman until this spring, when the Power on/off switch finally gave out.
DeleteWOAH! What A Piece Of CRAP BATTERY! The Duracell Batteries I Normally Buy Are Fine - So I Saw These Fancy, Expensive QUANTUM and Went For It. I Got Paid On October 3rd, Its October 29th And One Pair Of Batteries In My WIreless Apple Mouse ARE DEAD! I AM SO PISSED OFF! WHAT A RIP! Not Only Am I NOT Going To Buy The Quantums Im Not Buying Duracell Every Again. My Quantum Batteries WITHOUT QUESTION Lasted HALF! ...HALF The Amount Of Time As The Regular Alkalines. NEVER AGAIN!
DeleteTotally agree with the "press's here" to see what or how much battery life is left is such a gimmick! Quantums that I use for my for my candles were dead as a doornail. But that's not what they read..all 4 read that they were still @ 100%, & the 2 remaining New ones read the same!
DeleteThe quantum didn't with in a mouse and an outside temperature guage. I thought both devices were bad until I replaced the batteries with the coppertops.
DeleteFrankly, I think the cheapest thing to do is go to the 99 cent store and pick up whatever they have at the time. Else going to to a Costco or Walmart and buying a large pack is second best.
ReplyDeleteAMAZON Has 100 packs for like 35.00
ReplyDeleteWhich battery?
DeleteThe ONLY thing that counts is that you buy ALKALINE batteries, no zinc carbon. They are soooo poor in capacity, they are ampty quicker than you can change them ;-)
DeleteZinc carbon is suited for remotes and quartz clocks ONLY (low drain devices).
Definitely the best are primary lithium cells, especially when used in high drain devices. Alkaline AA batts effctively loose up to 50%(!) of their capacity when loaded too heavy (more than let's say 500mA). The ONLY battery that will sustain loads of up to 1000mA without any capacity decrease is this lithium battery. It has 3000mAh against 2500mAh for alkaline, which SEEMS a small difference... until you load the alkaline enough to see that 2500 plummet to around 1500 or less... The best buy however are some Sanyo Eneloop NiMH rechargeable batteries. Long lasting and will deliver up to 1000mA without problems.
The difference is even more in favor of the Lithium if your device is constant-power or otherwise can pull more runtime out of the increased voltage (which is not the case for unregulated flashlights or motorized devices). http://lygte-info.dk/info/ComparisonOfAABatteryChemistry%20UK.html even at 0.1A they have 35% more energy. Below an amp, save some money and get the Advanced instead of Ultimate lithiums. Still, unless you need the 10-20 year shelf-life and wide temperature range, it is FAR more economical to use Eneloop (or other LSD NiMH) rechargeables.
DeleteI'm actually gonna go a step further and get some eneloop pro aa

DeleteCool I just saw a groupon discount 48 count Duracell coppertop for $19+3 shipping and thought maybe buying the more expensive quantum, but this review helps save $20. Thanks for the sacrifice. Also saw this and thought it was a cool vid that might be useful
ReplyDeleteLooks tricky so be careful.

I bought a 6-pack of the Quantums yesterday and popped 2 in my camera. They lasted ten minutes. Ray-o-vac gets me an hour or two. The Duracell quantums are just awful and I won't buy Duracell again.
ReplyDeleteI don't believe you.
DeleteNeither do I
DeleteI put four in my Fujifilm Finepix S and they lasted roughly 4 hours.
DeleteI also don't believe you,
DeleteI don't believe that you don't believe him
Deletefor both people who said the battery only lasted minutes or hours, how many photos did you shoot in that period?
DeleteDon't use alkaline batteries in cameras or flashlights
DeleteThere is a rumour that Duracell batteries are not to be used in clocks. Is this true
DeleteI just got some 3aaa and put 1 in my little Bushnell hatlight with 1 led light and it didn't last a total of 2 hours.....battery is garbage and for the price I will never buy them again
DeleteStaples "Daily Deal" for today is a 24-pack of Duracell Quantum batteries for $7.99. Although "Quantum" makes these batteries sound high end, just before I submitted the order, I thought maybe I should look for a review and found this page. Since I usually pay $1 for between 2 and 4 AA batteries, $7.99 is either a VERY good deal or not too bad. There aren't any kids in this house, but we do seem to go thru AA batteries pretty quickly, so this should keep us well-stocked for a couple of years! BTW, shipping was free and I paid for them with a Staples Reward Card (rebate on a previous purchase for 5 reams of paper which ended up being essentially free -- only had to pay sales tax!).
ReplyDeleteWas considering buying them. This is how I found this review as well. Decided to go on eBay instead and found 108 regular Duracell batteries for $25.79 = 24 cents per battery.
DeleteBe cautious of buying bulk (or any cheaply priced) batteries on EBay- Heck, even Amazon has the problem of some of them being fakes.
DeleteI buy AA, or AAA alkalines on sale, anywhere, when the price is about, $ .33 each. Lately, I've been buying at Pep Boys. A 24 pack, around $ 6.00, or $ .25 each. Can't beat that. I think that D and C cells, are going to be harder to find. Everything in running on these tiny batteries, now.
ReplyDeletecame across your site as i was comparing performance of batteries. thanks for the blog.
ReplyDeletefyi: staples is offering Duracell Battery Quantum Alkaline AA, 24/Pack for $7.99. Thats $.33 per battery but this daily deal is good until may 1st.
I've been using Duracell coppertops in my rain gauge for several years. I insert new batteries on January 1st hoping for a full years service. However, like clockwork, the coppertops always give out 2-3 weeks before the end of the year. This year I installed Quantum batteries hoping for them to last the extra 2-3 weeks for the entire year. Numerous reviews across the internet indicate this battery is actually inferior to the coppertop. For me, time will tell.
ReplyDeletePlease report back with your findings. My analysis is far from scientific, so any corroborating or contradicting evidence would be appreciated. I'm pretty sure that these Quantum batteries may end up being better for high current draw (flash photography) or long life. But for low current draw like your rain gauge or my flashlights, the Coppertops are better.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteHave you ever tried any Energizer Ultimate Lithium batteries? They seem to outlast everything except for rechargeables.
I have not and perhaps I should get some and use the same flashlights. Reading the print I was led to believe that the Energizer Ultimate were better suited for high draw battery applications. Why don't I do that and update this post.
DeleteDisposable lithium batteries still would outlast any other disposable batteries, even any rechargeables, several times over.

I am using Google's Blogger product for this site and therefore have very little control over browser compatibility. DeleteI picked up pack of Duracell Quantums for use in my Xbox 360 controller out of pure curiosity in battery life. I'll start by saying that rayovacs last about 2 weeks of heavy halftime before being completely dead. Not a good choice for me. Duracell Coppertops last about a month before being completely dead. Better. But the Duracell Quantums last about two and a half months before being completely drained. Not exactly sure why I'm getting massively different results than you, unless its something to do with the type of device. In the long run with the different results I'm seeing it depends on the type of device you're using it in. And although the Quantums seem to last twice as long for me I may go back to generics or maybe rechargeable batteries simply because of the hefty price on the Quantums. I hope this reply is helpful to others, although my tests are also far from scientific.
ReplyDeleteHeavy playtime, not halftime.
DeleteGlad you posted, I too can not find any decent info. This is currently the best-on-the-web -- not to be disparaging of your article, but WTF?
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I notice several people going for the cheapest even though the coppertops last longer, and given Costco's prices the length of use per penny calculation seems to go to the coppertop.
That said, I've gone almost completely to Eneloops (NiMH rechargeable, was Sanyo, now Panasonic). I've had a few coppertops leak and damage equipment. I've yet to have an eneloop do that. They might not last as long, but being rechargeable, that's not an issue (and I'm not sure that they don't last as long).
With heavy use just replace (and recharge) every month. So you need two (2) sets. Long term they will be cheaper, and you don't lose anything by replacing them with a recharged set. Oh yes, get a GOOD recharger.
WARNING: Certain devices (wireless mice, keyboards, some remotes) will not work (or not very long) with eneloops. iGO are rechargeable alkaline batteries, and work fine. They can come with a good (I think) recharger from Amazon. They aren't as good for most uses as eneloops, but they work where eneloops don't.
maybe certain ones won't, but all the mice, keyboards, and remotes I've tried work just fine off NiMH. Logitech and Apple brands, at least.
DeleteYes my Apple devices (wireless keyboard and wireless mouse) seem to drain every 2 to 3 weeks with heavy usage, using the regular coppertops... I seem to be getting a month out of the Quantums... my guess is that I probably had an older batch of coppertops and the Quantums have not been around long enough to have been sitting in the warehouse for too long... there's no production dates on these things so the older one's might have 20% less power than the newer ones... so since those side meters are not that accurate, I guess I'll go with the coppertops if they can confirm the actual production date of the battery. I understand it is OK to charge new/almost -full regular alkalines with the right charger, at least once, before usage... this might be the best way to go and to deal with the loss from storage time issue,
DeleteI just opened a 16-pack of Quantum AA batteries that I bought last fall/early winter. They were all dead! No charge. (Well, only one had about 20% charge by its own measure.) I just had stored them in my kitchen drawer (nothing unusual). Hoping to get money returned somewhere, but without exact sales receipt, I'm probably out of luck. Definitely will never buy Quantums again.
ReplyDeleteSend them or talk directly to the company. Theur engineers would be very interested in having exact samples of a defective product. Please do not give up so quickly. (P"S" I have been satisfied with Duracell Coppertops. Both flashlights C cell and Smoke Detectors 9V).
DeleteSome old data. in the 1970's we did life tests using a plotter and a fixed load. We measured the lifetime from full charge to the point where our product would stop working. We tested all alkaline brands, and found the Duracell lasted longer than all the others. I don't remember the percent difference, but it was significant enough to take notice,
DeleteI did fall for the advertising for the Duracell Quantum - bought the large pack - primarily for my camera. Yep - I use a real camera for speed "professional" photo taking. Last night was my first run at an event using the Quantum batteries. Strange happenings. After only a couple shots, my camera behaved as if the batteries were totally dead and would shut down. For some reason, the Quantum batteries function differently in that they discharge power and then need to rest and regroup before they will discharge another burst of power. It was a night event and I needed continual flash function. I will not use the Quantum batteries for photo taking again. Perhaps they do indeed last longer? But they are problematic in usability for speed photo taking where you need to take multiple shots consecutively. The batteries simply refuse to function. Will change back to my reliable coppertops for tonight's event.
ReplyDeleteDuracell batteries sold that strength meter on their batteries before and still available , but depends where you buy the batteries . There is something wrong with the Duracell Quantum batteries. 5 families i am friends with , living miles apart bought these batteries and nothing happened with their electronic goods . All the batteries were dead . they did store exchange several times and same results , dead batteries . its generally once every few months i was working at a department store , 1 to 6 customers returned newly purchased dead battery . the year 2010 battery made 1997 . store goof and fixed .
ReplyDeleteI think they are referring to the shelf life.
ReplyDeleteDuhh
ReplyDeleteOver the years I have experimented with various batteries. My dad (now passed) and an electronics engineer highly recommended the Copper Top from years ago. I have had some other brands but kept on returning to the Copper Top, never ever had an issue. I was always curious about the Quantum and since you were good enough to do the exhausting tests. I have decided to stay with what's good. I hate to say it but mainstream advertising is a good testament of what stays or not. I think we'll see the Quantum slowly subside, if they end up being not as good as they pose to be.
ReplyDeleteI have bought my batteries at Costco for several years now. I like the big bulk packs, cheaper.
Go Copper Top Go
for cameras I like energizer 6x or better I had a sony s20 and used reg alkiline ,lasted short time with 8x was on vac. lasted whole time took 200 shots
DeleteCostco has the Quantum batteries at 30 for $12 now, I grabbed a pack...
ReplyDeleteone test isn't really precise or fair do you think?
ReplyDeleteRespectfully - Kevin
Dont WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!!..... put this battery in my game camera, went back 2 days later, and no pics and batteries were dead, to expensive for that, I will stick with dollar store brand, they are the ones that have lasted the longest on this game camera in the weather... up to 1 month
ReplyDeleteThe cheapest option long-term is to buy good Eneloop rechargeable batteries and a quality charger like the Powerex 8-battery smart charger.
ReplyDeleteObviously it costs more money initially, but after 3-4 replacements you break even. And the Eneloops are good for over 1000 (that's not a typo) recharges.
I bought 6 batteries from a dollar store ,either ray-o-vac or Panasonic, I don't remember, but NONE lasted more than a few pictures each, in my point and shoot camera. I don't buy batteries at dollar stores anymore.
ReplyDeleteI don't either. Half the pack will be bad right out of the package when you check them with a battery tester. At least avoid obvious generic Chinese batteries.

DeleteI recently bought a pack of 30 Quantums at Costco. I should have read this blog first. I put them in my portable radio that sits in the bathroom so I can listen to traffic in the morning. I usually have to change batteries once every 3 months. The Quantums didn't last three weeks. What a lousy product. Back to the Kirklands or the copper tops. The Quantums are nothing but marketing trash!
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this instructive article.
ReplyDeleteObviously a ripoff play on quantum dot battery technology that really will shake up the battery industry.
ReplyDeleteThe testing can't be done by an apples to apples comparison. Different batteries handle differently depending on the scenario like constant current, constant voltage, constable power and overall load. Google duracell datasheets and you will find load charts showing expected life based on the characteristic of what you're trying to power.

ReplyDeleteFinally- someone got it right. Copper tops might be better for a flashlight while the quantums look to be better for low powered devices running over a long period of time. Look at Duracell's charts and it's clear once you look below 250mW constant power draw. Looking at the curves it makes perfect sense that the copper tops would last longer running a flashlight.
Deletemy step dad bought my mom CVS brand batteries and after a day she would hear a pop nd her mouse stopped working, my mm changed the batteries and it worked again and after about 24 hours hers another pop her mouse again it happened through the pack my step dad got more CVS batteries my mom had a pop from the new batch and that pop took her mouse out of commission she had to get a new one since then we avoid CVS batteries
ReplyDeletework and reporting! Keep up the amazing works guys I've added you guys to my personal blogroll.camping batteries
ReplyDeleteAs with any life limited product batteries fresh from the manufacturer last longer than those taking days or months to reach the user. Those obtained from sources having a very high turnover are likely to be "fresher" than those from low turnover locations. The only real "defense" is to store those you do purchase in your refrigerator to lower the "self-discharge" characteristic present in all batteries. http://data.energizer.com/PDFs/temperat.pdf is a link to one source for shelf life information.
ReplyDeleteI purchased a 6 pack of aaa quantum and put one in my remote mike head set transmitter ,and nothing worked ,Went to the store and purchased 4x aaa copper top ,they workok ,.Finally discovered a subtle difference the quantum center post + was not makng contact ,due to it does not protrude far enough to contact the + terminal .Well this is a bummer ,as they do not mention this ,so you expect them to be the same size and they are not , sloppy manufacturing I would say,or poor quality control .
ReplyDeletesounds like the majority of the people have had issues with duracell quantum, but I've had no issues myself. I'll definately post here if i find any problems with them on my own. btw, I've had a few problems in the past with having Alkaline energizer batteries corrode when i took my old waterproof fm radio into the bathroom when i was having a shower, most likely from the steam. it happened within 3 days of it sitting on the counter by the sink, and i only turned it on when i showered twice a day. in the end it ruined my waterproof fm radio. if you're curious i got it on sale at the source by cicut city when they still sold that one in stores.
ReplyDeleteReading some of these comments, sounds to me like these batteries act like they use a capacitor to discharge the power, and slowly recharge it from its battery cell. This is just a theory mind you, and I could be completely mistaken, but it makes sense to me seeings how people say they die quickly but seem to come back over time. And in low draw situations, ID expect these to be amazing. None the less, I will be sticking with lithium batteries. Until they perfect the solid state sell, lithium is by far the most efficient in my experience.

ReplyDeleteattached along with all your AA or AAA batteries and then insert your battery in the slot of the toy you want to run. This way the life of your battery will shoot up by almost 80%.
I find the fact that the Costco battery lifetime tested so much shorter to be more surprising than the difference in Duracell brands actually. ...Another posted testing showed it to be the best performing Alkaline actually (although all were very close - advocating commodity pricing). And, many even speculate Kirkland to be re-branded Duracells.
ReplyDeleteI just used up some Duracell 9V Procell vs the 9V Quantum on some commercial grade equipment to measure noise. Starting tests with a voltmeter showed the Procells at 9.65volts average across a dozen batteries and the quantums at an average of 9.98volts across a dozen batteries.
ReplyDeleteThe quantums lasted 76hrs 30min versus 74hrs in the same equipment under the same conditions. Those 2 extra hours sometimes mean a lot sometimes not. BUT another thought occurs - does "lasts longer" mean a longer shelf/storage life?! *giggle*
Oh and by the way, the Procells and the standard duracell coppertop lasts just about as long in the same equipment - although the regular copper top usually tests between 9.55 and 9.65 volts vs the fairly consistent 9.65 I get with the procell - I assume this may have to do with how long the coppertops were sitting around on the shelf.
Ooops typo correction to the above 9.98 volts is supposed to be 9.93volts.
DeleteI bought a 10 pack of Duracell Quantum AAA batteries after my last Duracell Coppertop AAA died. I was using the coppertops in my Audiotechnica headphones which use them for the noise-canceling feature. The Duracell Quantums won't even work. They must have some tiny variation in size or shape, but the red on/off light doesn't come on, no matter what. They work fine with the regular Duracell coppertops.

ReplyDeleteGood job idiot.
No wonder you treat batteries as a commodity. You buy the worst cheapest junk. Those never last. But never ever buy the most expensive either. The best for the price i find are Duracell Procell. In stores they run $1 per battery but online you can get a 24 pack for about $10. They last the longest ive found for the money and they never ever leak.
ReplyDeleteMy wife bought some Duracell Quantum batteries. My question is why does the small (I guess it's a 6 pack)package say "NO ALKALINE BATTERY" yet on the back of the package it says "Alkaline Batteries"? This can be confirmed by Googling Duracell Quantum batteries, then look at the center front of the 6 or 8 packs.
ReplyDeleteSo which is it, alkaline or not? Confusing labeling.
What the label says is "No Alkaline Battery LASTS LONGER". It is a bit confusing since "No Alkaline Battery" and "LASTS LONGER" are on two separate lines.
DeleteMy testing has shown that there is no difference in time-of-use between the copper-top Duracell batteries and the Quantum ones. The only difference is the testing capability with the Quantums. I don't find that function useful; I put the batteries in a device and leave them there until they need to be replaced.
ReplyDeleteMaybe things have changed since the review was originally written, but I also find the price difference between the two to be negligible, at least where I shop. Recently I needed some batteries, and the Quantums were on sale, cheaper then the copper-tops, so I bought them. Normally I would buy the copper-tops, but I don't find the difference between the two to be as drastic as the review would indicate.
If you like the testing ability, get the Quantums. If, like me, that doesn't matter to you, stick with the copper-tops. But don't think the difference is as great as the review makes it seem.
I should have added, another testing site, that I consider more credible, rated the Quantum batters ahead of the copper tops.

This was for AA batteries.
Weird... I might be wrong (and probably am) but still have the impression that old times, batteries used to hold much more. Regular alcalines batteries like Duracell really used to run nice. Nowadays, looks like they come already with only half life!
